Welcome to Harties Methodist Church — a warm, vibrant Methodist congregation in the heart of the Hartbeespoort area. We are a family of God called to worship, fellowship, and serve our community. Our mission statement says it well:
God calls the Methodist people to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ for healing and transformation.
Our History
A Methodist presence in the Brits/Hartbeespoort region began in 1936 when preachers travelled from Pretoria to conduct services in Brits. For nearly seven decades the area was supervised from Pretoria, without its own resident minister.
As the Hartbeespoort area expanded around the year 2000 with new housing developments, church leaders envisioned establishing a local Methodist congregation that could financially support a full-time minister between two locations.
In 2005, Rev Jannie Hofmeyr was hired to lead Brits Methodist while founding the Hartbeespoort congregation. The inaugural service in Hartbeespoort took place on 4 November 2007 at the SAVF Dienssentrum hall, with approximately 25 adult members. A R200,000 donation and support from Pretoria Methodist churches sustained operations while attendance grew.
In 2010, the churches purchased a 2.1-hectare agricultural property in Melodie. Construction planning began in 2011 but faced permitting delays until July 2016, when municipal approval was secured. The completed church held its first service on 21 December 2018 and was consecrated by Rev Sidwell Mokgothu on 17 February 2019.
Recent milestones include garden landscaping by Irene Small (2019), Coenie Bakkes joining as caretaker (2020), and Bessie Kraak’s appointment as church secretary (October 2021). Rev Mike Durrant, who had served as Resident Minister since January 2015, retired in 2021 and was succeeded by Rev Simi Ngomane, whose ministry began on Christmas Day 2021.
Our Mission Strategy
Our mission strategy is built on five questions:
- How can we encourage our people to explore God’s call upon their lives?
- How can we develop the small group ministry of our congregation?
- How do we proclaim the Good News of Christ in Harties?
- How are people in Harties suffering and what can we do to alleviate that suffering and address its causes?
- How can we help people in Harties to live self-sustaining and productive lives?

Sunday Services
We worship every Sunday at 08:30 at Harties Methodist Church, Plot 57 Schumann Street, Melodie Holdings, Hartbeespoort. We are opposite the Seventh Day Adventist Church — travel up the R511, just after Mount Lyric Complex turn left, then after about 300 m turn left into the church property.
